find me in all deep shadows;
there I will draw breath."

"I remember when scrapping your knees, or tripping over a rock was true pain .
I remember when pain was bearable .
And now I realized that as we grow older, it seems to get worse ."

Growing up means watching all your heroes die.
It’s realizing that every parent makes mistakes,
that they weren’t monsters,
or superheroes,
they were human.

My father isn’t Superman
but he works a bunch
of jobs and even
though he’s not home
often, his absence
just means that
he cares about me
enough to keep
a roof over our heads.

My mother works two jobs
and still has time to take
classes at a community
college to try and
get the education
she didn’t have time
for the first time around.

Growing up is watching
the bad grade you got in chemistry,
your SAT score,
your GPA,
your college rejection letters,
the name of the boy
who didn’t like you back
in 9th grade,
the things that don’t matter
fade away from the
back of your mind.

Growing up means
watching some of your childhood
friends turn into the people
they used to hate.

It’s realizing that
you can’t save anyone
from themselves.
They have to do it on their own.

Growing up means
you can’t fight anyone’s
battles for them
because you have your
own to fight.

Growing up is realizing
you can’t always keep everyone
around forever but
if you love them enough
you’ll find a way.

I think growing up
also means that you’re
always scared as hell
about growing up
because you never
feel like a grown up.

Maybe being scared
just means you’re still
and figuring things out.

So if you’re scared,
just remember
that all of the rest
of us are too.
